Our Approach to Effective Grammar Learning

In Grammar Workout, users see sentences that are missing the structure of interest.  Beginning with a multiple choice activity, the user selects the correct form of the missing structure. The user then hears the complete sentence produced by a native speaker.

Why Grammar Matters?

Grammar is the backbone of clear communication.  In every language, people put words together in specific ways to get their meaning across.  Each language has its own grammar. Most of us don’t need to think much about grammar because we learn these rules intuitively as children surrounded by speech.  However, when we learn a second language, it is easier and faster if we have some rules, accessible samples and practice.

Communication

Every grammatical rule has a specific purpose.  For example, adjectives are used to describe people places and things.  Verbs – the action word in every sentence – have specific forms (conjugations) to indicate who is doing what.  An article (a short word) is required before every noun in French. It’s often the only way to know whether the noun is singular or plural since French people don’t pronounce the “s” at the end of words. For example, in English, we talk about boy and boys. In French garçon and garçons have an identical pronunciation so a “le” or a “les” is required.

Listening

Listening to Grammar:- Children learn the grammar of their native language through listening. Correct speech just “sounds right.” Some of the most effective language teaching is based on the linguist Stephen Krashen’s theory that learners “pick up” a language; through exposure they understand that is slightly above their proficiency level.Understand the purpose behind grammatical rules.Listen and expose yourself to everyday speech. Practice pronunciation by recording and comparing your speech with native models.
